Chapter 25: Chu Muge: “Meow”

Aside from Chu Muge and Gu Yao, who both took full baths, the rest of the group simply wiped themselves clean.

Night had fallen outside. As Chu Muge rummaged through the large shoulder bag, her hand brushed against a few candles.

“Oh, those!” Bai Caiwei explained with a sheepish smile. “I thought, since we don’t have electricity, if it gets too dark, we could light some candles.”

Good thinking.

A lighter was easy to find in the house. Chu Muge lit one of the candles and placed it at the center of the table.

Warm, orange light spread out from the flame, casting a cozy glow over the entire living room.

In the dim environment, the flickering candlelight made it feel like they were gathered around a fireplace on a cold winter’s night. The atmosphere turned unexpectedly serene and comforting.

Outside, the broken city lay in ruins, the streets littered with dead insect corpses. The stark contrast between the dangers of the outside world and the peaceful safety of the room was striking.

Staring at the flame, the tension that had gripped them for so long began to ease, and drowsiness crept in.

Bai Caixie yawned involuntarily — only to hear a loud clunk as a glass of beer was set down on the table.

“Do you guys drink?”

Chu Muge’s calm voice broke the silence as she sat down in one of the chairs.

Gu Yao paid no attention to the question, her gaze fixed on the little red toy car in her hands.

She never liked alcohol, and now that she was a zombie, the idea of drinking made her stomach churn.

“Of course we drink! Why not?” Bai Caixie’s eyes lit up, his fatigue vanishing. “It’s good to relax once in a while.”

“I’m not drinking,” Bai Moxue said lazily from across the room. “I’m heading to my room. You guys clean up after yourselves.”

Chu Muge watched her leave, then shifted her gaze away.

Drinking in front of strangers is never a good idea, she thought. Especially in front of someone who seemed… off.

But Chu Muge’s intuition was sharp. While Bai Moxue gave off a shady vibe, she didn’t trigger any real sense of danger.

If the woman had any ill intentions, Chu Muge — ever the cautious cat — would have sensed it by now.

“Senior, are you drinking?”

Gu Yao immediately shook her head.

Absolutely not.

“I’d rather die than drink that stuff.”

“Then sit here with me.” Chu Muge pulled out the chair next to her.

Obediently, Gu Yao sat down and continued to play with the little car, pushing it lazily across the table.

Bai Caixie couldn’t wait any longer. He grabbed a bottle of Erguotou liquor, poured himself a glass, and took a sip.

Under the warm glow of the candle, he clicked his tongue in satisfaction. “Ah, drinking is one of life’s pleasures.”

His short-haired sister shot him an annoyed glare.

Chu Muge chuckled softly and poured herself a glass without hesitation. “Agreed.”

She had always been kind and tolerant toward those who helped her, and having a drink was no big deal.

“Have you ever had alcohol before?” Bai Caixie asked curiously.

“Drank…” Chu Muge paused. “Never.”

“Really?” Bai Caixie frowned. “Are you sure you’ll be okay jumping straight to Erguotou? It’s pretty strong.”

“I’ll be fine,” Chu Muge said calmly.

After all, I have memories of drinking.

But there was one thing Chu Muge overlooked…

Memories were just that — memories. Her current body hadn’t built up the tolerance that her future self supposedly had.

Bai Caixie wasn’t a heavy drinker, but he could hold his liquor well. One glass of Erguotou didn’t faze him at all.

However, his sister wasn’t so lucky. After just a few sips, her face turned red, and Bai Caixie frowned at her.

“You’re done,” he said flatly. “Go wash up and go to bed.”

Erguotou was strong, and she clearly couldn’t handle it.

Meanwhile, Chu Muge…

She blinked, her eyes already a little glassy from the alcohol.

“Meow.”

Everyone froze.

Bai Caixie stared at her, dumbfounded.

“…What?”

Chu Muge blinked again, seemingly oblivious to what she had just done.

Gu Yao, still playing with her car, glanced up, her lips twitching in amusement.

“Did you just…”

“Meow.”

Chu Muge tilted her head slightly, as if testing the sound.

Then, as if nothing had happened, she picked up her glass and took another sip.

Bai Caixie whispered to his sister, “Is she… okay?”

His sister, equally confused, shook her head.

Meanwhile, Gu Yao couldn’t stop the small smile that tugged at her lips.

Drunk cat Chu Muge?

This… is going to be interesting.

Bai Caiwei’s eyes widened in defiance. “Who asked for your opinion?”

Bai Caixie couldn’t hold back a chuckle as he recalled a certain memory. “I’m just worried you’ll be like last time — you kept drinking stubbornly, and then you threw up more than you drank.”

Under the faint candlelight, Bai Caiwei’s flushed face appeared slightly blurred. She muttered, “...Shut up, or everyone will think you’re mute.”

Chu Muge silently observed their sibling banter and took another sip from her cup.

The sound of Gu Yao’s toy car wheels rolling on the table filled the quiet room.

Time ticked by slowly.

As they drank, Chu Muge began to frown.

Bai Caixie, fooled by her calm demeanor earlier, assumed she could handle her liquor well. He eagerly refilled her glass, again and again.

And Chu Muge, stubborn as always, drank everything that was poured. One cup after another, the Erguotou began to feel like plain water — her tongue was going numb.

Her catlike eyes grew unfocused as she stared at the bottle.

The red star on the label… Wait.

Why were there two?

No — three?

The flickering candlelight blurred her vision, and none of the others noticed her growing intoxication…

…until Chu Muge let out a soft whimper.

Bai Caixie, mid-conversation and buzzing from the alcohol, froze when he heard the sound — a small, animal-like whimper.

Gu Yao, who had been engrossed in her toy car, stopped and glanced up.

…?

Before she could fully process what was happening, something soft brushed against her cheek.

Gu Yao: What the…? (O_o)

Chu Muge, her face flushed from the alcohol, was nuzzling her like a cat, her newly sprouted cat ears twitching slightly atop her head. She clung to Gu Yao, refusing to let go.

“Senior…” Her voice was slurred, barely coherent.

Chu Muge was drunk.

Gu Yao didn’t resist, remaining expressionless as the drunk cat clung to her.

The soft, warm cheek rubbing against hers went on for a while. But when Chu Muge’s face began moving up and down in a persistent nuzzle, Gu Yao had had enough.

She reached out with one hand and firmly pushed Chu Muge’s face away.

Gu Yao: So annoying… d(T-T)b

In the dim light, Gu Yao’s pale skin seemed to regain a healthy glow under the orange candlelight. Her cool, indifferent expression as she pushed Chu Muge’s face away made her look like the quintessential “cold beauty” in Bai Caixie’s eyes.

And to Bai Caiwei, watching from the sidelines, the scene before her was dripping with “couple vibes.”

Especially Chu Muge’s clingy behavior — it all made sense now.

No wonder Chu Muge was so fond of Gu Yao.

Later, it took both Bai Caiwei and Gu Yao working together to drag Chu Muge back to her room.

Bai Caiwei glanced at the drunken cat sprawled across the bed, then turned to Gu Yao, who stood silently by the door.

Bai Caiwei’s eyes sparkled with mischief as she leaned out of the room, peeked back inside, and called softly, “Goodnight, zombie lady.”

With that, her head disappeared, and the door clicked shut.

The sound of her hurried footsteps echoed down the hall.

Left alone in the room, Gu Yao turned and gazed at Chu Muge, who lay sprawled on the bed.

Chu Muge’s unfocused eyes locked onto Gu Yao’s direction. After a few seconds, she began to wriggle closer.

Gu Yao hesitated for a moment before sitting down at the edge of the bed.

Chu Muge immediately rested her head on Gu Yao’s lap, her face turning inward. She murmured something incomprehensible.

Her cat ears, still twitching, seemed to be even more restless now that she was drunk.

Unable to resist, Gu Yao reached out and gave one ear a gentle rub.

The soft, fluffy texture was strangely satisfying to touch.

Chu Muge’s face turned even redder, her brows knitting together as she murmured, “…Don’t… don’t touch…”

Just as Gu Yao was about to pull her hand away, Chu Muge’s drowsy voice drifted up, barely audible:

“But… if it’s you, senior… I guess it’s okay…”

Her words were slurred and more like a sleepy mumble than a coherent sentence.

Gu Yao paused, then gently patted Chu Muge’s head.

So cute.

Little did Chu Muge know, both of them were treating each other as pets.
