Chapter 26: Dare to Ask, Where Is the Road Ahead?
Morning.
The cleaned crystal core was silently placed into the bag by Chu Muge without any expression on her face.
Bai Caixie couldn't hold back anymore and spoke up, "Yesterday, you..."
Chu Muge gave a deathly stare.
What about yesterday?
Bai Caixie swallowed the words he was about to say, glanced at his sister, and sighed, "The weather is great today."
That topic change was way too abrupt!
Gu Yao quietly walked over to Chu Muge and patted her on the shoulder.
"Hmm? What's wrong?" Chu Muge's tone softened as she looked at her.
Gu Yao took out a pre-written sticky note and showed it to her.
[ I want to sit in the front seat. ]
"Of course you get to sit in the front seat," Chu Muge frowned slightly and casually ruffled her hair. "After all, when I get tired from driving, I'll need to look at you to recharge."
There was an unexpected whiff of romance in her words, hitting Bai Caixie like a critical blow.
Oh no! There's a weird couple in our team now!
Once they had packed up, it was time to head out.
With the addition of Bai Moxue, their team now had five people and a dog.
With three people in the back seat, Big Dog had no place to sit, causing a temporary dilemma.
At that moment, Bai Caiwei suddenly spoke up, "I'll hold him."
Facing the group's gaze, she spoke quickly, "Why are you all looking at me like that? I know he's ugly, but he saved my life."
Big Dog barked at the right moment, panting and wagging his tail.
Bai Caiwei was a girl who knew gratitude. Big Dog had saved her life during a deadly pursuit, and she couldn't forget it.
Chu Muge nodded in acknowledgment, then opened a bottle of medicine and quickly took a pill.
The action was so fast that even Gu Yao couldn’t tell which pill she had taken.
"Alright, let’s go." Chu Muge cleared her throat and opened the driver's door.
The upcoming journey should be smooth, hopefully, with no more unexpected events.
The vehicle started moving down the road until it reached the city’s edge and eventually disappeared over the horizon.
...
Flesh Tumor.
In a hidden corner of the city, dead bodies were covered with a carpet of flesh. Their eyes were wide open, and their mouths gaped as tendrils from the flesh carpet penetrated through their mouths and spread throughout their bodies.
This flesh carpet was formed by infected entities devouring each other and merging. It still bore scattered feathers, sharp fragments of bones, insect legs, and blackened shells.
These were the remnants of the two mutated flying creatures and giant insects.
The mutated entities had flown into this city and fused with the giant insects, giving birth to this flesh carpet.
The dead bodies, clad in combat uniforms, stared wide-eyed in eternal shock.
They belonged to White Eagle Squad Three, Bai Moxue's teammates.
The vehicle sped along.
On the straight road, theirs was the only vehicle in motion.
There was still some distance to New Jaro. It would take a few more days to get there.
This part of the journey was the most tedious, nothing to do but travel, which made it boring for Bai Caixie.
Suddenly, his eyes lit up. "Hey! Want to play cards?"
The short-haired girl and Bai Moxue both turned to him.
Bai Caixie rummaged through his pocket and pulled out a deck of cards in a small paper box, excitedly suggesting, "Let’s play Landlord!"
Bai Caiwei girl couldn’t help but ask, "Where did you get that?"
Bai Caixie awkwardly looked at Bai Moxue and chuckled, "Uh, from Miss Bai’s place... Since we were leaving anyway, I thought we might as well bring it."
"Landlord," Bai Moxue repeated the term, pausing for a moment. "How do you play?"
Bai Caixie was stunned. "You don’t know how to play Landlord?"
"..." Bai Moxue shook her head.
"No worries! Come on, I’m a pro. I’ll teach you."
Gu Yao held a cleaned white crystal core, staring at it as if it were a sculpture.
Chu Muge glanced at her from the driver’s seat and softly asked, "Senior, what are you thinking about?"
Gu Yao raised her gaze to meet hers, then shook her head.
However, after a few seconds, she took out a sticky note and began writing on it.
Chu Muge slowed down the car a bit.
Don’t want to cause an accident while reading a note.
Gu Yao handed the sticky note to Chu Muge, who glanced at it.
[ I don’t know if I should eat it. ]
Chu Muge shifted her focus back to the road and smiled. "If you want to eat it, then eat it."
Gu Yao lowered her head and stared at the crystal core in her hand.
Her body’s instincts screamed at her to eat it immediately.
But there was another voice in her head telling her to stop.
Her memories from before crossing over were becoming blurrier. Her emotions were fading. She stood at a crossroads, unsure of where to go.
Gu Yao recalled Bai Moxue’s expression when she had strangled her earlier.
Now she understood, that was a look of disappointment and confusion.
Eat it.
Gu Yao glanced back at the person who had coldly advised her to eat the core earlier. She was now awkwardly playing cards with the Bai siblings.
Perhaps for zombies, eating the core was the right choice.
But Gu Yao couldn’t understand why a sliver of stubbornness remained in her heart.
She was searching, fumbling through the darkness to find another way.
But now, standing at a dead end, she couldn’t find any direction.
At that moment, Chu Muge’s pale hand gently rested on her wrist. The girl’s gaze remained fixed on the road ahead as she softly said, "Senior, no matter what you decide, I’ll support you."
There was a strange psychological connection between them, an ability to vaguely sense each other’s thoughts.
Gu Yao nodded.
She desperately needed a breakthrough, something to help her find a way out.
"Wow."
Bai Caixie placed his cards down, marveling at Bai Moxue’s win. "You’ve got a knack for this. You learned so quickly!"
Bai Moxue gave a faint smile and put down her cards. "Of course. I learn everything fast."
"No way," Bai Caixie joked. "How about flying a plane, tank, or aircraft carrier?"
Bai Moxue thought for a moment. "Give me some practice, and I can do that too."
Her words carried a hint of arrogance.
But given her military background, it might actually be true.
"By the way, you said you’re from New Jaro, right?" Bai Caixie asked curiously. "What’s it like there?"
"New Jaro..." Bai Moxue gave a faint smile. "It’s a comfortable place, harmonious and friendly."
Chu Muge nearly hit the brakes.
Friend, those words can’t be said casually.
"Really?" Bai Caixie was skeptical.
Bai Moxue shrugged. "It might be true, or it might not be."
She looked out the window and said softly, "For some, it’s heaven. For others, it’s hell."
It was a paradise for the powerful and a nightmare for the powerless.
