Chapter 19: Team Assigment

In moments like this, there was no time for deceptive probing or cunning schemes.

Outside, swarms of mutated giant insects lurked hungrily, leaving no room for hesitation or wasted time.

Swift action was the only viable option.

A faint smile appeared on Bai Moxue’s face. “Are you willing to give it a try?”

“How are we splitting up?” Chu Muge cut straight to the point, skipping unnecessary chatter.

Whether or not Chu Muge should trust her was irrelevant; this was currently the only plan to break out of their dire situation.

“Two teams,” Bai Moxue said, enunciating each word clearly. “One group will distract the majority of the insects, while the other heads to Central Park to take out the queen.”

“Can you guarantee the queen isn’t highly dangerous?” Chu Muge asked.

Bai Moxue glanced at her and shook her head.

“No,” she replied coldly. “Which is why we need the strong ones to go.”

The strong ones?

Meeting the group's questioning gazes, Bai Moxue raised a hand. The temperature in the room plummeted as icy winds coiled around her fingertips.

“Someone like me,” she said simply.

...

The plan came together unexpectedly quickly. Bai Moxue and Chu Muge had a mutual efficiency that left little room for hesitation.

Bai Caixie, meanwhile, was still bewildered, unable to fully grasp the rapid decision-making of these two decisive women.

Having once served in the military, Chu Muge found herself instinctively in sync with Bai Moxue’s approach.

The atmosphere remained tense and fast-paced. After briefly exchanging names, they moved on to the task of assigning roles.

Bai Caixie sidled up to Chu Muge, speaking softly. “You... you’re really just trusting her like that?”

“I don’t.” Chu Muge cast a glance at Bai Moxue, who was opening the door to an inner room, and replied evenly, “But she is indeed part of White Eagle Squad.”

Chu Muge had a sharp memory. Among the information she’d come across was a death list, and Bai Moxue’s face was on it.

White Eagle’s Third Squad entirely wiped out.

...

The room Bai Moxue had been using was surprisingly well-equipped. Inside, everything was sealed tight curtains drawn and windows locked, creating an airtight space.

Outside, there was even a car.

Although it was a standard model, the fact that it was operational made it valuable.

Chu Muge, nerves stretched taut, thought she’d deserve a proper break after this ordeal.

“All right, let’s go over the plan one more time,” she said.

A rudimentary map, drawn on her phone, was spread out on the table.

“Me, Senior, and... uh…”

“Bai Moxue,” Bai Moxue interjected, emphasizing her name.

“Right, Bai Moxue,” Chu Muge nodded. “The three of us will head to the queen’s nest.”

Gu Yao really shouldn’t be going, but Chu Muge couldn’t bear to leave her behind.

It was as if Gu Yao were her most cherished possession, something she always needed within sight.

To put it bluntly, if something went wrong, at least they’d face it together.

Turning to Bai Caixie, Chu Muge continued, “You’ll take the dog and drive. Your job is to distract the insect swarm. Here’s the map with the route. Stick to it and lead them on a chase. J City is a maze of roads, buy us as much time as you can.”

The dog, with its air cannon ability, was reliable protection, enough to keep them safe for a while.

The young man nodded, accepting the responsibility.

At that moment, Bai Caiwei l spoke up. “I’m going too.”

Chu Muge glanced at her.

Bai Caixie’s sister, Bai Caiwei, explained, “I’ll go with my brother. I don’t want to stay here.”

“You’ll be useless there,” Chu Muge said bluntly.

“I know,” Bai Caiwei replied, her voice steady. “But if we die, we die together.”

Her brother was her only remaining family. She couldn’t just let him face this alone.

Great, thought Chu Muge, everyone wants to be buried together.

Shrugging, she said, “Suit yourself.”

...

The car roared to life.

The seats vibrated slightly as the engine hummed.

The car’s headlights flicked on as the wheels began to turn.

With one hand on the steering wheel, Bai Caixie flipped his hair and said, “Back in the day, they called me the Drift King of Akina Mountain.”

He floored the gas pedal, and the car surged forward.

In the next moment, it swerved sharply onto the road. With a press of the horn, the car let out a loud blare.

Honk!

It began.

The engine roared, its sound reverberating through the city and waking it from its eerie slumber.

Nearby, hidden swarms of insects stirred, their wings vibrating as they began to converge.

The car raced along the road, horn blaring intermittently. Behind it, a dense, dark swarm of insects grew larger, their numbers swelling as they chased the vehicle.

It was time for some wild street racing.

Bai Caixie slammed on the accelerator, steering the car single-handedly as it hurtled forward.

Once the car had drawn away the nearby insects, the three remaining inside the small hideout peeked out cautiously. Moving swiftly, they began their journey toward Central Park.

Running.

The map was committed to memory. Chu Muge recalled the route, gripping her Tang Dao tightly.

Although Central Park wasn’t far, it was still several kilometers away.

They needed to cross multiple streets to reach it.

With their abilities, they could move quickly, but even so, it would take at least ten minutes.

The engine roared again.

“Left! Left! Turn left!”

Watching her brother drift sharply onto a new street, Bai Caiwei clutched her chest in shock. “You almost hit that!”

“I wouldn’t,” Bai Caixie replied calmly.

“You would have!” Bai Caiwei retorted, eyeing his single-handed driving. “I swear we’re not making it out of this alive.”

Suddenly, a dark swarm of insects appeared ahead. Bai Caiwei’s face turned pale. In a panic, she lifted the zombie dog, pushing its head out through the sunroof.

The dog opened its mouth wide, aiming at the swarm.

Boom!

Green ichor splattered as the insects exploded, creating a brief opening. Bai Caixie seized the opportunity, flooring the gas pedal and driving through the gap.

“That was terrifying!” Bai Caiwei hugged the zombie dog tightly, her eyes wide.

“Quit being scared!” Bai Caixie glanced at the rearview mirror. “Behind us!”

Bai Caiwei turned to see several insects almost reaching the car’s rear bumper. She quickly raised the zombie dog again, pushing it through the sunroof and aiming at the rear.

“Don’t stick it out too far!” Bai Caixie barked, speaking rapidly as he maneuvered the wheel. “If its head gets chopped off, we’re screwed!”

The zombie dog opened its mouth, aiming backward.

Boom!

Green goo splattered across the back window.

“I know!” Bai Caiwei shouted back. “Stop nagging me and focus on driving!”

...

They were close.

Chu Muge sliced through a stray insect, its body splitting in two and writhing on the ground. Her expression remained blank as she stepped away.

Insects shared a faint connection, a network of sorts, with all signals ultimately received by the queen.

For every few insects they killed, they had to move quickly. Any unusual activity could alert the queen, sending new swarms to search the area.

Interestingly, midway through their journey, they spotted a speeding car.

Bai Caixie sat in the driver’s seat, steering confidently. Bai Caiwei clung to the zombie dog, using it as a makeshift weapon, the two of them yelling at each other for reasons unknown.

The car shot past Chu Muge and her group, the following swarm of insects close behind.

Hiding in the shadows, Chu Muge’s team waited until the swarm had followed the car far enough away before resuming their route.

They were almost there.
