Vroom, vroom, vroom—
The engine roared.
This was an apocalyptic race!
Fog swirled in the sky, casting a gloomy filter over the entire world.
The off-road vehicle sped straight down the road. Gu Yao sat upright, forced by the momentum, leaning against the seat, squinting her eyes.
The zombie horde followed closely behind, entering the area within seconds.
Countless hanging tentacles began to sway slightly, and in the next moment, they surged downward, stabbing at the countless heads below.
Writhing, purple mouths with suction cups appeared, dripping saliva as they latched onto flesh, swiftly draining their prey into dried-out husks.
The broken road was the only path to escape, and now they had no choice but to crash through it.
Chu Muge felt lucky to have lured the zombie horde.
These tentacles are everywhere!
So many of them, creeping and eerie.
As the first explorers in this area, their off-road vehicle naturally became the target of the tentacles.
They shot down like spears, but the vehicle’s spikes struck them, leaving them limp and splattering with thick purple fluid, coating the vehicle and turning it a solid shade of purple.
A suction cup latched onto the window.
Chu Muge glanced at it, frowning slightly.
The purple mouth inside the suction cup was sucking on the transparent window, clearly visible.
If it got inside, the next second they touched it, they would probably be drained into a dry corpse like the zombies outside.
This eerie speed of predation defied science... The only explanation was that these plants had gained some sort of "substance."
In the center of the mouth, there was something that looked like an eyeball.
It really did look like an eyeball, with a small black dot in the center of a white sphere, rolling around randomly inside the mouth.
Bored, Gu Yao happened to be observing the tentacles and suddenly froze. Reflected in her gray eyes was the writhing mouth inside the tentacles.
It was as if the mutated plants had intelligence, realizing they couldn't break through the off-road vehicle.
In Gu Yao’s vision, the "eyeball" inside the mouth became sharp, like a needle.
Chu Muge noticed it too.
The needle scratched the glass, leaving a mark, then slowly withdrew.
Oh no.
Damn it.
Chu Muge cursed under her breath and floored the accelerator. She turned to Gu Yao and said, “Duck down!”
In the next second, as the two ducked, several spikes shot toward the vehicle.
Clang, clang, clang—
Various parts of the vehicle dented with crisp sounds, and a few tentacles shot toward the windshield, piercing it and leaving cracks. Chu Muge’s pupils contracted, and she grabbed one of the tentacles, yanking it. Purple fluid spurted out, and she casually tossed the broken tendril behind her.
The off-road vehicle was bulletproof, with a sturdy body. Though the windshield was pierced, the cracks didn’t spread completely. Most of the tentacles were drawn to the zombie horde behind them, so the pressure on them wasn’t too overwhelming.
But they still had to go faster.
With bloodshot irises, Chu Muge gripped the steering wheel with one hand, squinting as she grabbed another incoming tendril with the other hand, tearing it off and tossing it aside again.
The zombie dog whimpered.
The sticky purple fluid splattered everywhere inside the car, even splashing onto Chu Muge and Gu Yao’s faces.
Behind them, the gray horde of zombies clashed with the dark green tentacles, while the off-road vehicle seemed like a speck of dust in the chaos.
It was roaring.
The spikes kept hitting the vehicle, leaving battle-scarred dents. Breaking through was just a matter of time, so all they could do was go faster, even faster.
The off-road vehicle rammed through countless tentacles, turning its exterior completely purple, with fragments of tentacles clinging to it.
They were almost there.
Up ahead was the wall.
Clang, clang, clang—
Spikes kept attacking the vehicle.
The dents were getting deeper and more numerous.
The windshield was smeared with purple fluid, obscuring most of the view, turning the interior dim and casting an eerie purple glow.
Gu Yao, terrified but smart, ducked down when Chu Muge helped her tear away the tentacles, curling into a ball near the footrest like an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
Gu Yao: ??????
This is too much, it's terrifying! She didn’t want to die.
"Watch out, get ready!" Chu Muge raised her voice. She, too, closed her eyes, gritting her teeth and ducking down. At the same time, she floored the gas pedal and shifted into fifth gear.
The icy wind blew through the small holes pierced in the windshield, like blades cutting into their faces.
At top speed, the row of spikes at the front of the vehicle finally unleashed its full power.
The off-road vehicle roared and collided fiercely with the vine wall.
—Boom!
Purple fluid exploded through the vine wall.
The tentacles, still feasting on zombies behind them, trembled and began to thrash wildly.
Chu Muge bumped her head on the dashboard, letting out a soft groan of pain.
Gu Yao also hit her head, expressionless as the world seemed to spin around her.
In the back seat, the zombie dog slammed into the sides, barely clinging to life, twitching like a dying fish.
The off-road vehicle burst through the vine wall, creaking as it wobbled before speeding off, leaving debris in its wake.
The road ahead was wide, and they raced forward.
Broken tentacles twitched on the ground, oozing purple fluid.
…
“OMG! OMG!”
Chu Muge raised her head from the seat, quickly sitting back up, hands gripping the steering wheel. She gasped, her gaze blankly fixed ahead.
The off-road vehicle kept moving.
The front was covered in sticky purple fluid, and through the few spots not obscured by the liquid, she continued driving.
“Ugh…”
She wiped her face, frowning as she looked at the sticky purple fluid on her hands, shaking it off in disgust.
The ostrich-like Gu Yao slowly sat back up, expressionless, though she wasn’t in much better shape—half of her clothes were soaked in the purple fluid.
"That was intense."
Chu Muge glanced at the few holes in the windshield, catching her breath before saying, “Almost didn’t make it.”
There were still a few broken tentacles in the backseat, any one of which could have killed them.
"This smell is awful."
The wind blew through the holes, making the sticky fluid on their faces dry and harden, leaving them feeling uncomfortable.
Chu Muge complained: "It smells like nail polish."
She hated that smell!
Wind and sand swirled, as they exited Area B, it felt like they had hit the highway.
The surroundings were open, and the most striking thing was the road that stretched straight ahead.
Gu Yao didn’t look at her but instead turned to glance at the gray skyscrapers behind them.
Due to a detour, their journey to New Garo still had some distance, and along the way, they might face more challenges.
The city loomed oppressive and bleak.
After driving out of the city, the distant clouds seemed to thin slightly, allowing some golden sunlight to shine through.
The fog was lifting.
The off-road vehicle sped down the open road, gradually leaving the gloomy city behind.
The sun rose on the horizon, and the off-road vehicle, covered in purple fluid, reflected the golden light, gleaming brilliantly.
The vehicle grew smaller and smaller until it finally disappeared over the horizon.

**The pulsating flesh...**
In the deserted and deathly silent shopping mall, something was being nurtured in the basement. A giant mass of flesh occasionally emitted tiny bursts of red light in the darkness, resembling magma. At a certain moment, blood began to ooze from the flesh. A bony appendage pierced through it, then quickly withdrew, replaced by a dark, glossy eye peeking out to look at the outside world.
*Gurgle...*
The sound was like bubbles rising. In the next second, several tentacles pierced through the flesh, tearing it apart from within, revealing the true form of the creature inside. Its body was entirely covered in bone, supported by five or six pairs of long legs. The body itself was bloated, and its back was filled with holes, each concealing a tendril within. Its posture resembled a massive, grotesque beetle.
What was even more striking was that a bony tail extended from the creature’s back. The sharp blade at the tail’s tip gleamed with a cold light, resembling a giant scythe. It had absorbed the genes from a previously mutated creature, taking on some of its abilities.
It opened its mouth slightly, revealing organs that excreted a clear liquid, which stuck to a nearby surface, producing a white mist.
*Gurgle...*
Its dark eyes stared into the void, as if locking gazes with another pair of eyes across a vast distance.
Meanwhile, elsewhere—
"Senior, what's wrong?"
Chu Muge, driving a vehicle with a freshly cleaned windshield, glanced at Gu Yao, who had turned to look in a particular direction. She asked this while keeping her focus on the road.
Gu Yao shook her head and turned back to face forward.
---
The creature shifted its body and began moving through the basement. It had received a command from the Mother. The tentacles on the second basement floor, which had been dormant, began wriggling again, glowing with faint red light. The fleshy mass continued to spread. This place was becoming a base, a nest, or an infection ground where more creatures would be born.
All of it belonged to Gu Yao.

**"She really left me a huge mess,"** she said.
**"I even gave her Area A! This Area B was supposed to be where I’d expand!"**
The little girl stomped her foot in frustration, gazing into the distance at the green vines devouring a tide of corpses. She was clearly displeased.
**"I worked so hard to open a new branch, and now all my employees are dead!"**
A small mouse by her black leather shoes squeaked a few times.
**"You’re right."**
Her eyes brightened.
**"After all, this place is just a stepping stone."**
The mouse squeaked again, and she crouched down, lifting it into her palm.
**"You're so thoughtful... I heard they're planning to start bombing that place."**
She giggled, a cheerful sound.
**"I even indirectly voted in favor of it."**
**"That place doesn’t belong to me anyway, it belongs to another kind. Let them bomb it all they want."**
She paused for a moment, listening to the mouse’s squeak, then after a moment of silence, she shook her head.
**"Oh, her? She’s a bit different from the others, she's more interesting. I don’t care much about the one being bombed in a few days, so it's fine if that one dies."**
**"But I hope she doesn't die. I can’t wait to meet her."**
The little girl spoke lightly.
**"Human weapons are strong. We’re not their match right now."**
From the intelligence she had gathered, it seemed humans had even recaptured several key cities.
**"But it doesn't matter."**
The girl shook her head.
**"We’re about to gain 'quality'!"**
She spoke of something powerful, mysterious, a force that seemed to transcend this world’s systems.
Staring at the mouse in her hands, her mismatched red and gray eyes gleamed.
**"You’re the first of those who possess it, aren’t you?"**

A new journey had begun.
The off-road vehicle sped through the landscape.
"Senior, want to try this game? Play it however you like, no big deal," Chu Muge said, holding the steering wheel with one hand as she handed her phone to Gu Yao.
"I’ve got a few games on here. You can try them if you're bored, and the battery’s still good."
Gu Yao silently looked down at the phone screen, slightly tilting her head. Under the sunlight, they drove into a golden field.
The app's name was long, so Gu Yao consulted a dictionary stained with some liquid, looking up the words one by one.
It was called “The Road of No Return in Canada”.
